Always one of my most popular images, this shot of Edith Macefield's house in my Seattle neighborhood of Ballard ran in The New York Times. Macefield had refused to sell her tiny home to developers in the rapidly gentrifying neighborhood, earning her near legendary status within the community. Here a construction worker passes while they continue to build around her home. Taken in December, 2008 with a Nikon D3.

Yasothorn, Thailand. June, 1995.

I shot this image, using Kodak Tr-X film, a Nikon FM2 manual camera and a 28mm prime lens, during the annual rocket festival (called "Bun Bang Fai" in Lao) celebrated in Laos and in the Lao speaking parts of Northeast Thailand, often called Isaan. The image was scanned on a Hasselblad Imacon scanner, providing unbelievable tonal range and detail from the original negative, sharp edge to edge. I took this photograph very early in my career, and I keep one hanging over my desk.

I took this photograph below in late January, 1996, while covering the last days of the Cambodian Civil War on assignment for Newsweek Magazine. I was standing on the side of Route 57, the main road from the Northwestern provincial capital of Battambang to Pailin, a Khmer Rouge stronghold to the south, when the tank appeared out of the bushes and raced down the road. A "samurai" and "geisha" exchange phone numbers in a coffee shop in the "Movietown" theme park. The first time I saw Kyoto I didn’t realize I’d seen it. After watching the Amazon Spheres being built here in Seattle for nearly two years, I finally got access to photograph them, and the best kind of access - the sole photographer allowed in for 8 hours of shooting. Walking in, though, my first reaction was I wouldn't have enough time. The sheer scale of the project and the constantly shifting lighting created myriads of possible images. It was really overwhelming.

Taken in Kolkata (formerly Calcutta) India in 2006. I was working on a story with a local architectural conservationist on the palaces of North Kolkata and when we returned to our taxi to head to the next palace, we found our driver asleep in the back seat of his classic Indian Ambassador taxi. We didn't wake him but decided to get lunch nearby while he finished his nap. Taken with a Contax G2 camera, shot on Fuji Provia 100, scanned on Hasselblad Imacon scanner.

I was working on a story on Japanese Yakuza gangs and was given an address in the city's notorious Kabukicho neighborhood where I would meet a local gang boss, "Agate-San", and spend several days photographing him for a story for Time Magazine. Why would anyone want this photograph on their wall? I’m not sure, but I’ve sold a few copies so far. Religious devotion takes on many forms and the annual crucifixions in the Philippines every Easter are certainly the most extreme I’ve seen. For about 3 years living in Bangkok I spent late nights working the streets, where I fancied myself a modern day Weegee, documenting the city's night life, photographing illegal street racers, crime, accidents and the occasional elephants. After Thailand cracked down on the illegal timber industry in the early 1990s, thousands of elephants were put out of work, forcing them and their mahouts (owners) to bring them to the city to beg for a living. My first trip to Burma was in July, 1994, on assignment for The New York Times, to photograph democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi, then still under house arrest in her home next to Inye Lake. Empty flight deck of a new Boeing 747-8 under construction. I grew up on this plane, so walking around Boeing's massive factory and seeing the 747's iconic hump from the inside, as a skeleton, was mind blowing. Still Queen of the Skies.

Flying used to mean adventure, and as a kid, risk, but as I’ve gotten older the adventures have been tempered and flying is, well, just so safe. The thrill is gone. This recent series is shot from straight under and the dirtier the plane the better. The streaks of mud and oil somehow make the planes seem more real to me, now that flying has become so mundane.

One of the odder pieces of advice I've been given by editors over the years is to not include protest photographs in my portfolio. I'm guessing the main reason is because you can't throw a rock at good protest these days and not hit a photographer, they are so well documented. Mr. Nick Fahey's his horse, 'Ig', on his property Cypress Island. Mr. Fahey, 66, lives alone in the cabin his father started building in 1939 at Tide Point on Cypress Island, Washington, near the San Juan Islands. Fahey's father bought the land in 1930 and started building the cabin in 1938 but Mr. Fahey continues to add to the home. He has lived permanently on the island since 1992. He has a son living in France and a daughter living in Seattle, WA.

A tiny figure of a worker walks past the staccatos of the B-Reactor at the Hanford Site, Washington, along the banks of the Columbia River. The reactor was the first large scale plutonium production reactor ever built and started production in December, 1944. The project was commissioned under the Manhattan Project, during World War II, to develop the first nuclear weapons. The B-REactor was shut down in 1968 and on August 25th, 2008, was declared a National Historic Landmark and is now open to tourists.

In 1996 I traveled to a Khmer Rouge base across the Thai border for an interview with Ieng Sary, a former top Khmer Rouge leader, accused of committing one of the worst modern genocides. On assignment for Newsweek, we spent a day in the camp and I was able to briefly wander around unguarded to photograph solders.Here a Khmer Rouge solder takes a cigarette break.

A child rides a rollercoaster at the 'Fun Forest' at the base of the Seattle Space Needle. Located at the foot of the Space Needle, the privately-owned amusement park was originally part of the 1962 World's Fair but was closed in 2010 and replaced with a far less child friendly glass museum.
