Edith Macefield's House - 11x17 Inch Print - $100
Seattle, USA. December, 2008
Always one of my most popular images, this shot of Edith Macefield's house in my Seattle neighborhood of Ballard ran in The New York Times. Macefield had refused to sell her tiny home to developers in the rapidly gentrifying neighborhood, earning her near legendary status within the community. Here a construction worker passes while they continue to build around her home. Taken in December, 2008 with a Nikon D3.
moreRocket Festival - 11x17 inch - $100
Yasothorn, Thailand. June, 1995.
I shot this image, using Kodak Tr-X film, a Nikon FM2 manual camera and a 28mm prime lens, during the annual rocket festival (called "Bun Bang Fai" in Lao) celebrated in Laos and in the Lao speaking parts of Northeast Thailand, often called Isaan. The image was scanned on a Hasselblad Imacon scanner, providing unbelievable tonal range and detail from the original negative, sharp edge to edge. I took this photograph very early in my career, and I keep one hanging over my desk.
moreSeattle Shipbuilders - 11x17 Inch Print - $100
Seattle, Washington. January, 2016
Repairs on the USCGC Healy. When ever I work on industrial photography I always hope for an epic image like this. The moment was made better when one of the ship workers walked in front of me to give the image scale. Shot on Nikon D4
moreHorse Cutters - 11x17 Inch Print - $100
Dusty, Washington. August, 2011.
Horse cutters Kimberley Gustafson and Tim Johnson, on the Alkali Creek Ranch. I was working on an assignment for The New York Times about cycling and stayed overnight on the ranch. After dropping my bags in my room, I headed out to catch the last hour or so of glorious Eastern Washington sun when I caught this moment with Kimberly and Tim, when all the elements came together. Shot on Nikon D3.

moreCambodian Tank - 11x17 inch - $100
Treng, Cambodia. January, 1996
I took this photograph below in late January, 1996, while covering the last days of the Cambodian Civil War on assignment for Newsweek Magazine. I was standing on the side of Route 57, the main road from the Northwestern provincial capital of Battambang to Pailin, a Khmer Rouge stronghold to the south, when the tank appeared out of the bushes and raced down the road. The image is the final in a series of 5 frames I shot when the tank blew past me, unaware of how close it was. The film was shipped later that week directly from Bangkok to Newsweek and I...
moreGion Geisha - 11x17 Inch Print - $100
Kyoto, Japan. October, 2002.
Taken on assignment for Vanity Fair in Kyoto, Japan, I caught this brief moment of a Japanese geisha entering a Gion tea house where I was having dinner with Mineko iwasaki, the famed geisha who's life story was the grist for Arthur Golden's "Memoirs of a Geisha". Shot on Fuji Provia 100, scanned on Hasselblad Imacon scanner.
moreKyotoland - Samurai & Geisha - 11x17 Inch Print - $100
Kyoto, Japan. 2001-2003
A "samurai" and "geisha" exchange phone numbers in a coffee shop in the "Movietown" theme park. The first time I saw Kyoto I didn’t realize I’d seen it. Staring out of the hermetically sealed windows of the Nozomi Super Express bullet train, there was no end to the miles of factories and sterile, cookie-cutter housing projects that sprawl from Tokyo to Osaka, via Kyoto. Occasionally I spotted a rice field or the roof tops of small Buddhist and Shinto temples. At nearly 200 mph they could just be glimpsed through the webs of power lines, often squeezed...

Ed Carriere, born in 1934 and a member of the Suquamish tribe in Washington, State, has woven baskets for over fifty-five years. He learned the art from his great-grandmother, Julia Jacob, who raised him. For the past few years, Carriere, a master basket weaver, canoe builder and wood-worker, has worked with archaeologist Dale Croes, to recreate ancient Salish weaving. Croes, who has spent his career unearthing fragments of ancient basketry from wetsites throughout the Pacific Northwest, has worked with Carriere to recreate the ancient weaves and...

Kyoto, Japan. 2001-2003
A lone geisha arrives in the Gion District and is swarmed by camera toting tourists. The first time I saw Kyoto I didn’t realize I’d seen it. Staring out of the hermetically sealed windows of the Nozomi Super Express bullet train, there was no end to the miles of factories and sterile, cookie-cutter housing projects that sprawl from Tokyo to Osaka, via Kyoto. moreBayon Temple, Angkor - 11x17 Inch Print - $100
Bayon Temple, Cambodia. April, 2003
In April 2003 my wife and I spent 3 months traveling through Southeast Asia, after living in Japan and Bangkok for over a decade. The Iraq War was underway when we arrived in Cambodia and combined with the SARS epidemic in Asia, the country had pretty much emptied of tourists leaving the temples of Angkor all but deserted. Th tourist interlude allowed me to explore the temples with my Nikon f/1.4 prime lenses - 28mm, 35mm, 50mm and an 85mm - for a long, serene week. I used T-max 100 film so I could get high enough shutter speeds and later had the...

moreAmazon Spheres - 11x17 Inch Print - $100
Seattle, USA. March, 2018
After watching the Amazon Spheres being built here in Seattle for nearly two years, I finally got access to photograph them, and the best kind of access - the sole photographer allowed in for 8 hours of shooting. Walking in, though, my first reaction was I wouldn't have enough time. The sheer scale of the project and the constantly shifting lighting created myriads of possible images. It was really overwhelming.
The images were taken for Site Workshop, a landscape architecture firm in Seattle, who did all the plantings inside and outside the Amazon...
moreCalcutta Taxi Driver - 11x17 Inch Print - $100
Calcutta, India. November, 2006
Taken in Kolkata (formerly Calcutta) India in 2006. I was working on a story with a local architectural conservationist on the palaces of North Kolkata and when we returned to our taxi to head to the next palace, we found our driver asleep in the back seat of his classic Indian Ambassador taxi. We didn't wake him but decided to get lunch nearby while he finished his nap. Taken with a Contax G2 camera, shot on Fuji Provia 100, scanned on Hasselblad Imacon scanner.
moreYakusa Gangsters - 11x17 inch - $100
Tokyo, Japan. May, 2001.
I was working on a story on Japanese Yakuza gangs and was given an address in the city's notorious Kabukicho neighborhood where I would meet a local gang boss, "Agate-San", and spend several days photographing him for a story for Time Magazine. When my taxi pulled up at the address, I looked out the window and saw a line of young Yakuza underlings waiting in a line for the boss to arrive. I rolled down the window and shot 2 or three frames and couldn't believe my luck that I got what would be the opening shot the moment I arrived. Shot on Fuji Provia 100,...
moreEaster Crucifixion - 11x17 Inch Print - $100
Easter Crucifixion. San Fernando, Philippines. April, 1996
Why would anyone want this photograph on their wall? I’m not sure, but I’ve sold a few copies so far. Religious devotion takes on many forms and the annual crucifixions in the Philippines every Easter are certainly the most extreme I’ve seen. I traveled to the small town with a couple of other Bangkok-based photographers and we all struggled in near 100F heat to document the two day event. By the time I reached the actual crucifixions I was numb from the heat and exhaustion of battling through massive crowds to take images. I...
moreElephant beggar - 11x17 inch - $100
Bangkok, Thailand. April, 1995
For about 3 years living in Bangkok I spent late nights working the streets, where I fancied myself a modern day Weegee, documenting the city's night life, photographing illegal street racers, crime, accidents and the occasional elephants. After Thailand cracked down on the illegal timber industry in the early 1990s, thousands of elephants were put out of work, forcing them and their mahouts (owners) to bring them to the city to beg for a living. The practice has now, thankfully, been banned. This image was taken in Bangkok's Chinatown around midnight,...

Calcutta, India. November, 2006
The Marble Palace (abandoned wing), located on Muktarambabu Street off Chittaranjan Avenue in North Calcutta. It was the last project I shot on slide film, Fuji Provia 100. more images here.
moreRock on Rangoon - 11x17 Inch Print - $100
Rangoon, Burma. July, 1994
My first trip to Burma was in July, 1994, on assignment for The New York Times, to photograph democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi, then still under house arrest in her home next to Inye Lake. We spent a week in Rangoon with little to do before the military government agreed to let us meet her, so I went out most nights and wandered the city, taking photos. Returning to The Strand Hotel one night on the back of a rickshaw we passed a group of young Burmese men on their way to a concert. I fired off one frame in the dark, 1/2 second exposure, f/5.6 probably. I...

Everett, WA, USA. October, 2009.
Empty flight deck of a new Boeing 747-8 under construction. I grew up on this plane, so walking around Boeing's massive factory and seeing the 747's iconic hump from the inside, as a skeleton, was mind blowing. Still Queen of the Skies.
moreUnderbelly - 11x17 Inch Print - $100
Flying used to mean adventure, and as a kid, risk, but as I’ve gotten older the adventures have been tempered and flying is, well, just so safe. The thrill is gone. This recent series is shot from straight under and the dirtier the plane the better. The streaks of mud and oil somehow make the planes seem more real to me, now that flying has become so mundane.
The impulse for these photos comes from when I was 11, in the spring of 1977. On holiday with my family, the home we stayed in had the latest issue of Time Magazine with the photos from the terrible crash of two Boeing 747s at...
moreForbidden City Portrait 1 - 11x17 Inch Print - $100
Beijing, China. June, 2005.
In 2005 I worked on a self-funded project taking portraits of Chinese near the outer walls of the Forbidden City in Beijing. Using a Rollieflex 2 1/4 camera and Kodak Tri-X film, I wanted to shoot portraits of all the Chinese, tourists and locals, in and around the city. People come from all over the country to see the palaces and mix with beggars, street vendors, Communist party cadres and locals out for a simple walk. I eventually shot over 100 portraits, edited them down to about 30. This couple were taking a nap in the shade of the midday heat next to...

moreOccupy Seattle - 11x17 Inch Print - $100
Seattle, USA. May 1st, 2012
One of the odder pieces of advice I've been given by editors over the years is to not include protest photographs in my portfolio. I'm guessing the main reason is because you can't throw a rock at good protest these days and not hit a photographer, they are so well documented. I have a few protest images, though, that I love including this one from the Occupy Seattle protest. I love the calmness on the protestors' faces, it was a wonderfully peaceful moment in an otherwise crazy day of bottle throwing, mace and window smashing. It brings humanity to the...
